One of the most fun ventures a parent or parent-to-be can have is shopping for their baby. There are so many fun baby items out there to get for your new bundle of joy. Before you go shopping, however, here are a few tips. Travel systems, or coordinating car seat and stroller combos, are a popular baby item. However, most of the time you can find a better deal and a better stroller by getting them separately. Travel system strollers can be over-priced and over-sized, so save your money and find a separate light-weight stroller frame that your car seat snap in to instead.
Travel systems, or a car-seat and stroller combo, can be over-sized and over-priced. Strollers with smaller frames are usually easier to maneuver and use. If you want a stroller that allows you to use your baby’s car seat, look for an inexpensive stroller frame instead of a travel system.
Compare prices of items in multiple places. Commercial baby items are usually carried in more than one store, so don’t settle. Compare prices in stores and online to find the best price for the same item. Get the right sized car seat for your car. Some car seats are bigger than others, so if you have a smaller car it might not fit. Look at the dimensions of the car seat and make sure it measures to fit in your back seat. I would recommend going crib shopping in person. Cribs come in a variety of heights. You don’t want to have a hard time getting baby out of a crib that is too tall or too short. Once you find a crib the right size you can look online and see if there are any better prices. For parents who are planning on more than one child make smart shopping decisions. High chairs, car-seats and play pens are higher end products that can easily be used again for baby #2. Choose more gender neutral items for the high-end baby items, and leave the fun gender specific options to blankets, nursery items, and clothing.
Another good thing to shop for in person is cribs. Cribs can work great for some people, and be miserable for others. If you are very tall or short you want to find a crib that fits you, so you don’t have to struggle to get your baby out of the crib. Some baby items work great for multiple children. Instead of getting a decked out princess high chair, consider getting a more gender-neutral one if you are planning on having more children. Save the gender specific items to clothes and nursery items.
The biggest shopping tip I can give is to talk to your friends and get recommendations from them. Parents have been there and know which items are used and which ones are not. Talk to them and ask them which items they can’t live without, and which ones they have but never use.
