Getting Your Own Clothing And Fashion Sensibilities

When it comes to clothing and fashion, what it really comes down to is how you think you look in it. Forget all that stuff in the gossip rags about what’s in and what’s out. Forget about what happens to be the “new black” this year, forget everything everyone says about fashion. Look at fashion magazines for ideas now and then, but don’t treat it like the Bible of personal fashion.

When it comes to your personal style, it’s always much more rewarding to actually develop it yourself, to come up with a look that’s all your own.

With that being said, there are a few basic rules you want to follow. Maybe not to the letter, but you should at least keep these tips in mind when arranging your own wardrobe…

Colors

Typically, you don’t want more than two dominant colors in your outfit. Sometimes you can pull off a white shirt, gray pants and a blue jacket, but this is usually only if you’re actually using blacks, whites and grays, which do actually go well with just about anything. Something like yellow pants, a green shirt and a red jacket looks… Well, usually, sort of silly. You can mix more than two colors, but you always want to look in the mirror and double check. You’ll probably find a few color combinations you really like. Some bolder colors may be a little trickier to match, but there’s a great outfit in every hue if you know how to put it together.

Don’t Go Nuts

You don’t need every outfit to reinvent the wheel. Stick with some basic items you enjoy wearing, some button up shirts, tees, jeans, slacks, whatever you like. Codpieces and sombreros should really be reserved for special occasions. Lady Gaga and Andre 3000 make some pretty wild stuff work out, but the thing here is the they wear zany outfits on stage. When they’re just walking around, running errands, they usually dress a little more conservatively in shirts and pants, rather than one pieces, silver wigs and glam rock makeup. Of course, on the other hand, that Matthew “GET FREE MONEY FROM THE GOVERNMENT” Lesko guy supposedly wears his question mark suit all around town, so maybe you have the rare ability to get away with some pretty crazy outfits wherever you are.

Wear What You Like

Forget what the celeb gossip rags are saying is hot, just look at some of your favorite fashion icons. Maybe you’re in love with Jackie O’s wardrobe, so try some pill box hats on. If you’re a guy who really likes Freddy Mercury’s post-greaser look, get a leather jacket and some pomade for your hair. There really aren’t any rules as to what is and isn’t cool. If you like Hawaiian shirts, try them on with a few different getups, with jeans, slacks, various jackets, until you find a style that works for you. Just wear what you like and don’t worry what anyone says about it being out of date or square or over the top or anything. It’s your body, decorate it how you please.
