2010 Trend Alert! Fashionistas Favour Delicate Jewellery Over Statement Pieces

In the world of fashion, the coming of spring and summer usually means that we’ll soon be seeing our favourite celebrities and fashion icons working those spring/summer trends that just won’t go away. The tribal trend, for instance, is a summer staple, and you’d be hard pushed to walk into a shop in springtime and not find a few dozen nautical pieces filling up the rails.

Of course, these fashion trends wouldn’t be nearly as enduring without the accessories to accompany them, and of late we’ve seen these becoming very chunky and adorned with as many jewels, gems and sparkly bits as possible. While it’s usually the case that the designer trends as worn by celebrities are watered down into more ‘ready to wear’ pieces for us mere mortals to pick up at our local high-street stores, this simply hasn’t happened with this particular trend. From oversized wooden bangles to spiky studded bracelets and bib necklaces covered in multicoloured gems, the high-street fashion world had gone embellishment mad.

This season, however, there seems to have been a definite shift in the way our favourite fashionistas dress up their carefully styled ensembles. Fashion magazines, blogs and online fashion stores are filled with photos of celebrities wearing much more dainty and understated pieces to accompany the latest clothing trends. While pretty young things Alexa Chung, Daisy Lowe and Fearne Cotton seem to favour quirky charms on chains, Cheryl Cole’s been spotted wearing layered dull silver chains, and Michelle Obama and Samantha Cameron are often seen with barely visible diamonds or lockets on their favourite gold or silver necklaces.

Like a lot of fashion these days, fashion editors and writers view this trend for more understated jewellery as a reflection of the economic instability we’re still experiencing. From this point of view, shoppers seem to be investing in timeless jewellery or even raiding their parents’ or grandparents’ jewellery boxes for inspiration, instead of spending their money on more elaborate accessories that will quickly become out-dated. As a result of this, women are choosing to wear personalised charm bracelets instead of chunky wooden bangles, delicate diamond studs rather than extravagant hoop earrings, and romantic lockets over bold statement necklaces.

The decline in popularity for more overt and extravagant jewellery is also having a positive effect on traditional jewellers who specialise in selling pieces made from more expensive materials such as silver, platinum and gold, and whose sales suffered from the trend for costume jewellery which they simply didn’t stock. Recently, then, these traditional jewellers are seeing a steep increase in their sales of personalised items such as gold named necklaces, four leaf clover necklaces and more distinct charms produced by speciality jewellers such as Pandora.

So, thanks to this trend’s penchant for understated elegance and timeless chic, it could well be around for a fair bit longer than most flash-in-the-pan accessory fads.
