The term lingerie was originally meant to describe both garments for men and women. It means washables and comes from the French language. The garments today are attractive. During the mid and later parts of the twentieth century, undergarments became less substantial and were more likely to fit the form closely. During the 1960s, the industry became more glamorous. The garments were more likely to be designed to appear more sexy. Hollywood celebrities helped to popularize the attractive garments.

Today, you can see undergarments that are worn openly as outerwear. The addition of lace, decorative straps and fashion fabrics the bra is now visible in some clothing ensembles. The niche market continues to grow and stay in front of the fashion parade.

Since the mid 1990s there has been a push to wear the correct size of bra instead of a general bra size. A United Kingdom media campaign urges every women have a proper bra fitting with each and every bra purchase. Many stores now have sales personnel who specialize in the proper fitting of a bra. Fun designs, good fit and comfortable fabrics make lingerie a continuing fashion statement.
