The first pair of Dr. Martens were launched on April 1, 1960 making them 50 years old this year. They are still adored by all ages, sizes and classes and fit comfortably into many a wardrobe. Doc Martens come in a range of both shoes and boots although the eight eyelet and fourteen eyelet styles tend to be the most popular.
Black and Oxblood red remain the classic Dr Marten colours although bright colours and patterns are a popular alternative. The shoes range from classic black dress shoes to more funky styles. These have bright colours like pink and lime and are increasingly available along with the browns and blacks that are the standards of any shoe collection.
As Doc Martens are pretty masculine, it has sometimes been difficult for girls to know what to wear them with. Whilst jeans are always good choice with a pair of DMs, they can create a look which is just a little bit too manly for some women. If you do want to wear jeans with your Docs, then choose a loose, baggy style rather than the skinny jeans that have been so popular this season. Combat trousers are another great choice that looks great over a pair of Doc Marten boots or shoes. To lighten up the look, choose a really feminine top or sweater for a nice contrast.
Doc Martens can also look fantastic with long skirts, such as the peasant style pieces which were so popular last summer. During the grunge craze in the early 90s, Doc Martens were frequently seen paired with feminine, floaty dresses and skirt, it’s a look that doesn’t sound as if it should work, but you may well be surprised. The contrast between a colourful dress and chunky black Doc Marten shoes can actually look wonderful.
So, if you don’t own a pair of Docs, go for it. You may be surprised just how much you love them!
