A plain white boring bathroom can be perfectly functional but is usually not as attractive or relaxing as it could be. The goal of remodeling or redesigning a bathroom is to take this generic space and convert it into a space that is inviting and aesthetically pleasing.
Don’t think of a bathroom remodel as starting over. In fact, many of your fittings and fixtures can be used in your new design. Instead, think of how to change the overall design, incorporating items that you currently use if appropriate. This article describes how to remodel your bathroom without starting from scratch.
Theme or style: start with the basic decision of whether to have a contemporary or a traditional style in the bathroom. Either choice is fine, and will help you to narrow down future choices such as what fabrics to use and which colors work best.
Next, consider what overall impression you are trying to give. Do you want the bathroom to be calm, relaxed, romantic, pretty, elegant, edgy? Start with this component. Knowing what feel you wish to evoke, before you make the more specific choices, can help you achieve your goal.
Make sure that you pay attention to scale. In this case, more is not necessarily better. Choose items that fit well together and that fit within the space available without seeming cramped or crowded.
Don’t fill the room so full of items that you cannot move about, or that the room is jumbled and stressful to be in. You don’t have to use as much furniture as you can possibly fit in the space. Just use what is sufficient for your needs. A too-big bed, for instance, can take over a room and feel out of place.
Choose colors carefully and after considering the overall feel you are trying to accomplish. For a room that you want to be romantic, you would probably not want to choose all blacks and greys, for instance. Similarly, for a modern room with a vibrant feel, you would not want to use an earth-toned palette. Make sure that the mood of the colors you use matches the mood that you are trying to achieve in your design.
If you want to use some pattern or texture in your design, remember to keep it simple. One or two subtle patterns can make the space inviting and warm. A subtle decorative weave in a window shade, for instance, can be a lovely touch. At the same time, a bold patterned wallpaper can be overwhelming and garish.
With accessories, be selective. One bold accessory can add more visual interest to a room, whereas a mishmash of smaller items can simply appear cluttered.
Artwork. Don’t go overboard here. As with accessories, you want to have maximum impact with minimum clutter. One well-chosen piece of art is a better investment than several mediocre pieces scattered on the walls.
