This article will first address battery technology, followed by charger technology. We will attempt to discuss the many changes in both product types as quickly and clearly as possible.
The earlier technologies, on which rechargeable cells were running – including Nickel Cadmium, have been phased out in several parts of the world. NiMH has been around for quite a while now, and chances are that some of the rechargeable cells at your home will be of that kind.
The rechargeable batter that you are most familiar with would be the one inside your cellular phone; this is a Lithium Ion battery. Li Ion technology is a consumer favorite, being budget friendly; it also has great potential for additional uses in the future.
Lithium Ion has been advanced to where it is solid state, adaptable and very thin. It has the ability to be charged more than a normal battery, up to 40000 cycles. Smart Batteries have the ability to monitor their own charge, which keeps them from over or under charging.
Yes, charger technology has come a long way also. Now we can charge different size batteries and batteries with different types of cores, on the same charger or dock. You can purchase a single dock that charges both Lithium and NiMH batteries or that charges both a AA or a 9V battery. It is incredibly convenient to have one charger for all of your batteries.
Then the big change in chargers – modern chargers like the Powerex Maha MH-C808M have in built advancements like deep recycle charge – which fully discharges a battery before beginning to charge it. Anyone will tell you that the battery will last longer that way, and will also give better performance. These chargers also have dual modes of charging – one which charges rapidly, to be used when in a hurry; and one which charges softly and is gentle on the batteries, and can be used for normal charging. These changes make modern chargers quite attractive, and it is no wonder that most gadget freaks are now shifting to these models instead of the older versions.
