If you’re on the lookout for a suitable gift for a youngster, say for a Christmas or birthday present, then you could do worse than to have a look at some traditional gifts. Long established favourites – board games like Scrabble and Monopoly, train sets, slot car racing games etc. – have stood the test of time for a reason.
There are plenty of options for kids today, but the large majority of these will tend to have a rather short lifespan. Video games are a very popular choice today, whether for use on conventional consoles or for the portable, handheld gaming devices. However, most of these have a fixed goal – and ending – which, when reached, makes the game obsolete.
There are some exceptions – games such as Wii Sports don’t have a defined ending. As long as you can find someone who fancies a game of tennis or bowling, then you can play Wii Sports again and again. However, this is very much the exception to the rule and the large majority of video games have a pre-defined goal which tends to limit the useful life of the game.
There are other types of toys apart from video games which tend to do well for a while but then vanish completely, or diminish in popularity, after a fairly brief period of time. A lot of these are linked to either movies or children’s TV shows – such as Yugi-Oh, Pokemon and Transformers for example. The popularity of these tends to spike quite rapidly and then fade away over time – although Transformers are now in their second or third incarnation.
If you decide to go for the current craze in toys then your gift will probably be gratefully received. It will be necessary for you to keep updated on the latest developments and to be certain that you are aware of what’s in and what’s out. If you’re choosing a gift for your own kids then this probably isn’t too much of a problem. You will probably be on the receiving end of regular bulletins regarding what the coolest toys are – whether you want them or not. If you’re buying for a niece, a nephew or a grand-child, then you might not be fully aware of the rapidly changing fashions in the world of toys and it would be easy to pick the wrong thing.
Choosing a well established favourite – such as Scrabble, Lego, a train set, Barbie etc. – means that your gift may not be the very latest fad but is almost certain to be received with gratitude. It will also be more likely to be played with and enjoyed for a good time to come as kids tend to revisit these types of toys repeatedly.
If you’re looking for a traditional gift then you can’t get much better than a Hornby train set – but if you want something more modern then have a look at the new black Wii console from Nintendo.
